In 1973, Dr. Gordon Dutt, a soil scientist from the University of Arizona, initiated an experimental vineyard project on the red, acidic clay of Babacomari Ranch in Elgin, Southern Arizona. The success of this venture led to the establishment of a commercial vineyard in 1979, marking the inception of the first vineyard in the Sonoita-Elgin area. Subsequently, Sonoita Vineyards Winery opened its doors in 1983, debuting with a first-vintage production of 300 gallons.
