A Legacy Begins
In 1967, Joe Bertolone’s culinary journey began in London’s famed Piccadilly Circus, where he honed his cooking skills at an Italian restaurant. Upon returning to his native Liguria, Italy, Joe’s life took a serendipitous turn when he met Elvira, a talented young cooking apprentice. Their instant connection led to a long-distance romance that soon blossomed into marriage.
From Italy to America
In 1977, Joe and Elvira Bertolone, along with their children Michael and Sonia, emigrated from Italy to Gilroy, California. Here, they opened the first Joe’s Italian Restaurant in June 1981. The restaurant quickly became a cherished local icon and a landmark in Gilroy, earning features in the Library of Congress and the Food Network.
A New Chapter
After 27 successful years in the restaurant business, Joe and Elvira retired in early 2007 and relocated to Alabama to be closer to their daughters, Mary and Sonia. Their son Michael soon joined the family in Alabama, and a new chapter began for the Bertolone family.
